Buying a Small Or Large Kitchen Table

In a large kitchen an enormous kitchen table serves several functions, providing additional preparation space for chopping and mixing as well as serve as a repository for large components of frequent use, such as a food processor. The probability is that, if your food processor has to be removed from a high shelf and returned after use, that you will not get good value out of it. It provides a convenient surface to dump large bags which you can then pack away without stooping. It provides a play area for young children on rainy days, where they can spread their paints and crayons and puzzles. Engrossed in a blanket or sheet it makes a perfect tent or cave for the kids. Best of all it conjures up an image of a large and cheerful family seated to a lovingly cooked Sunday roast. The large kitchen is the hub of the home.

Alas, these days many of us are constrained to live in small spaces but there’s you don’t need to have an awkward and inconvenient table. Manufacturers and designers have put their heads together and are available up with a sweeping variety of styles and designs to satisfy each and every need. The size and form of your kitchen will determine your choice of table.

Generally, when the table will be placed in the centre of the room an oval or round table is more space-saving than the usual square tables with no dangerous sharp corners. Classics Furniture Design

There are several furniture pieces which were acknowledged as classics from the day they were made, while some happen to be slow burners and therefore are but now enjoying an elevation to classic status as we have experienced time to think back at periods with better perspective. In recent times, some pieces have grown to be so familiar they almost border on cliché, such as the hanging ball seat by Eero Aarnio or even the Eames lounge chair with its matching ottoman.

It is a wonderful irony however that certain of the greatest furniture classics of the 20th century is really a lowly café seat developed in the mid nineteenth century- the Thonet bentwood chair. In the 1920s and 1930s and again in the 1960s, when Victorian furniture became all the rage in the Pop period, this elegant and sturdy yet uniquely lightweight chair had the design establishment spellbound- such is its versatility. It is still easy to locate one today but such is its status that the original now carries a museum piece price tag.

Such is its popularity however, it has spawned many an alternative and copy which are all comparatively cheap and may be found in almost any furniture store in the country. Containing nothing more than two up-ended U’s which make in the arm rests and legs, along with a reclining J which makes up the seat, the Thonet chair oozes refined elegance and style.

Most other classics tend to have been extremely labor intensive to manufacture and made from costly high-quality materials, and also have therefore remained highly exclusive and expensive pieces. One very well known example is the chair designed by Mies van der Rohe for the German Pavilion at the Barcelona Exhibition of 1929. With its luxurious padded leather upholstery and polished steel frame, the Barcelona chair was later to become symbolic of the reception areas of chic 1950s offices and affluent penthouses. Today, due to the popularity of the Modern retro look, they’re again appearing in the same kind of locations and regularly make staring appearances in the bedrooms and living rooms of T.V. favorite Grand Designs!

Modern interiors take good furniture as their main focus, so really give your rooms something to focus on. The most iconic furniture pieces, such as the ones mentioned, are timeless. Such pieces can sit harmoniously next to good contemporary furniture if chosen and arranged confidently. There isn’t any point going to all of the trouble of sourcing out such items if you are only going to make an effort to seamlessly blend them into your modern home- display them proudly. Built a feeling of occasion around them by directing spotlights onto chairs, pulling settees off the beaten track, framing tables from underneath with colorful rugs or just choose some seating in a shade that contrasts together with your existing furniture. Add just a few carefully selected items such as ornaments or pictures that evoke a spirit of the period in which your classic furniture was made and you will have set the style and the look of the whole interior.

Contemporary Bathrooms Vs Traditional Bathrooms

If you are in the market for a new bathroom then you are probably embracing the dilemma of contemporary bathrooms v traditional bathrooms. It is a question that everyone who decides to do up a house faces and one that requires a bit of thought. The trouble is that answering the contemporary bathrooms v traditional bathrooms  question does not necessarily depend on the style of the rest of the house. Some of the most modern abodes have beautiful traditional bathrooms that work very well in the scheme of the house and conversely many traditionally furnished houses have the pleasant surprise of a thoroughly modern bathroom, which really compliments the rest of the rooms. If you want to try and make the right decisions when it comes to contemporary bathrooms v traditional bathrooms then it is a good idea to start by looking at the pros and cons of each.

Contemporary:

For most people, the idea of a contemporary bathroom is one that has a light and natural feel, with fittings that are either all natural materials, such as wood or stone, or modern and matched plastics or acrylics. A contemporary bathroom may also be one that is very usual – with features like giant glass sinks, or large, free-standing baths in smooth, egg or oblong shaped designs – or one specced out with the latest bathroom technology. Contemporary bathrooms suit large or small spaces and are a great way to really make your mark on your home with something unusual, as they are completely unfettered by ideas of what a traditional bathroom should look like.

Walk in showers, rainforest shower-heads, chrome and glass fittings, stone resin furniture, under floor heating, body jets in the shower, wet rooms, wallpaper, spotlights and skylights are all the kinds of features one would expect in a contemporarily designed bathroom and are often what give it the edge in the contemporary bathrooms v traditional bathrooms debate. This kind of bathroom can be constructed on most budgets as many of the more modern bathroom fabrics – such as acrylic and plastic – are cheap to purchase, although if you are looking for something more high end like stone resin, this will of course be pricier. It is much easier to incorporate heating and ventilation into a modern bathroom design, which can also bring costs down.

Perhaps the major downside to the contemporary bathroom is that these can sometimes feel a little cold or characterless if you do not get it quite right. Hi-tech gadgets can prove expensive if you are not willing to compromise and – if you are doing up a bathroom to sell – you may find that others do not share your love of minimalism in the bathroom.

Traditional:

Traditional bathrooms conjure up images of something from another century – roll top, free standing baths, luxurious fabrics, down lighting, elaborate tap designs, wooden flooring, warm fabrics, expensive metals, fireplaces and dark colours – can create a sumptuous boudoir feel in any bathroom. Traditional bathrooms tend to avoid Hi-tech gadgets, wet rooms and too much light, in favour of a more traditional bathroom experience that focuses around the bath. Having said this, the traditionally designed bathroom is not generally an uncomfortable space as most people looking for a traditional bathroom design will not buy original, vintage bathroom fittings and furniture, but the contemporary version. This is easy to do as most modern appliances and fittings are now available in a more traditional design, whether it is a large copper tub, or an iron rainforest shower.

One of the major advantages to the more traditional bathroom is the luxurious feel that it has – where a contemporary bathroom can feel a little cold when filled with stone, glass and chrome, a traditional bathroom tends to be warmer. Traditional bathrooms also bring elegance, whether it is in the form of classically designed gold fittings, or the fine lines of a beautiful roll top bath sitting in the centre of the room.

In terms of disadvantages, there are several: it may be a little harder to incorporate modern appliances – extractor fans, heating systems and luxurious touches like shower jets – although in most cases this can be done with some clever design to hide the ‘modernness.’ The other disadvantage is cost – it may cost you more to hide those more modern features and you will also find that most of the cheaper bathroom fittings tend to come in more modern designs and fabrics.

Flowers / Plants: A few planters with either real or artificial plants are an excellent addition. Real looks best, but remember artificial plants are the best place because they have no need for any watering or any other maintenance nor do they need sunlight and they don’t die or dry out either!
