Home Furniture Design and Fabric Selection

Home furniture design and fabric selection are very important to a modern homeowner, whether male or female. Nobody wants to choose the wrong furniture or home fabrics, and although the furniture design for split living rooms might appear the more important of the two, the wrong fabric selection can completely ruin an otherwise well-designed room.

So what do you do? Leave it to chance and hope that your untrained eye is as good as that of anybody else, or hire a professional to help you? In fact, your own opinion about how to decorate and furnish your home is likely to please you just as much as that of a professional interior designer. Most people who worry about such things are trying to please friends and visitors rather than select what they personally like.

This is not necessarily a bad thing, because most people do not make the best decisions when it comes to outdoor furniture design and fabric selection. While there is no procedure you can follow to come up with what is best for your home, here are some guidelines on how to go about selecting your furniture design and how to make the correct fabric selection to go with it.

Decide on a Theme

You cannot go to a furniture store or even begin to consider furniture without deciding on a theme for your home – or even for each individual room. Very few people furnish and decorate their entire home on one single theme, but tend to mix them. Thus, many people love to have at least one themed room in their home: an Egyptian room or a room based on Ancient Rome, Classical Greece or an Asian, Wild West or Native American theme.

None of these is suitable for general household furniture, of course, or for the normal fabric selection you will find in your local sores. However, it does show that your whole house doesn’t have to be decorated the same way. So when you decide on a theme, your living room, dining room, kitchen and bedroom can all be based on a certain home accent – even a traditional one.

For example, you can use antique style furniture and fabrics in your lounge or living room, with sofas and perhaps a chaise longue in the classical French style. Your dining room might be either contemporary, with a black glass-topped dining room table or one in beautiful glossy French polished walnut or mahogany with Queen Anne legs. The chairs might be traditionally webbed and sprung, and then upholstered in tapestry or velvet fabric.

What this is inferring is that you should decide on a general them for each room before you decide on appropriate home furniture design, and then choose the furniture and a fabric selection appropriate to that theme.

Home Furniture Design

As stated, the design of your furniture should go with the theme: contemporary, antique, Georgian or art nouveaux for example. Furniture makers such as The Custom Shoppe can help you design your own solid wood furniture, offering a choice of designs and woods appropriate to your general theme.

You may have chosen a Shaker theme with simple solid wood furniture. Shakers used what was available locally, such as pine, birch, cherry and poplar, and some even used maple or beech. You might prefer something more European, with stained dark oak, walnut, or cherry veneer or the exotic cinnamon-colored Asian teak or solid mahogany which has a beautiful deep red shade. Rosewood is another beautiful wood suitable for most forms of home furniture design.

Traditional American furniture, such as that available from American Craftsman, could be fashioned from light oak, apple or cherry, and black American black cherry is very much in vogue. So is Maple, although the wood you choose should be appropriate to the rest of the furniture in your room.

Home Fabric Selection

If you choose light oak for your dresser or armoire, a walnut or mahogany chest of drawers or table would not go well. This is where advice on home furniture design would be worth seeking. The same is even truer when you consider your home fabric selection. This is where genuinely serious mistakes can be made.

It would be far better if you could find somebody well versed in interior design, and while you might think that it doesn’t really matter – it does! If your drapes, rugs and upholstery fabrics all match, and the colors and designs were appropriate to the type of furniture you have chosen, then an OK room could be converted into a fabulous room.

Get It Right – For the Cats, Kids and the Visitors!

Keep in mind that not all fabrics are cat-proof, and many are also not child-proof. What that means in general terms is that you should be practical when choosing fabrics, and understand that what might be perfect for occasional dinner parties might not be so suitable for general use in a household with kids and a colony of cats with blunt claws needing sharpening!

Living Room Sets – Your Living Room Coming Alive

The living room is looked upon as the entrance of the house. It is the most vital room of the house playing two roles at the same time: it mirrors the owner’s taste and class and represents the prestige of the entire house. It is a place where families come together to end their day after a long work week or to enjoy a TV show together. The living room should have a very comfortable and welcoming atmosphere as it also has to welcome and entertain guests.

Living room sets and other furniture is designed to comfort anyone in the room. It is probable for the property owner to enjoy a desirable vibe in the living room by selecting some classy room set. The room furniture can include a couch, armchairs, coffee tables, sectionals, an end table and most importantly the complete room furniture that hold more than one piece of this individual furniture.

Each piece of furniture in the living or sitting room adds beauty to the ambiance. Some people like to have complete room furniture instead of individual pieces of furniture. This is because some people might find it difficult to match each piece with another one in order to get a compatible furniture environment in the room. There are many other advantages to select room furniture:

*-Matching Theme and Color scheme – this task is difficult to accomplish when choosing individual furniture. Especially when you wish to follow a particular theme or an identical color scheme, room sets are the best deal. As all the pieces are designed to be one living room furniture, it also becomes easier to match it with the current décor of your room. Purchasing a room furniture can make your search easier.

*-Affordability – comparing the cost of a room set and individual lounge furniture may give you a negative result. This way, room sets sound more costly. But assessing it thoroughly will conclude that it’s cheaper to buy living room furniture than purchasing separate pieces in order to create a set.

*-Uniformity – it is an important feature of a living or lounge room. Every different piece of furniture doesn’t create a unique vibe, uniformity is essential. Sometimes picking individual furniture pieces can create hodgepodge. On the other hand picking a room furniture, you are sure there is no mishmash. All the pieces in a living room set complement each other with regards to their material, texture, color and style.

These benefits will turn out to be more beneficial if the correct approach is taken when purchasing the lounge room set. Here are some tips:

1. Measuring the size of the living room is essential. You want the furniture to fit in the room instead of adjusting the room for your room set.

2. Go for warranties. By securing a warranty you can be prepared for unexpected mishaps with your furniture.

3. Go according to your budget or else you will like everything you can’t afford.

Choosing Living Room Furniture When Space is an Issue in Your Apartment

Finding great living room furniture that also helps conserve or best use your available space can be challenging even when you have plenty of room to work with. Imagine if you have small, one-bedroom or a studio apartment. What considerations should you have when choosing your end tables or sofas? You will need to think about the layout of the apartment, the style of furniture, what purposes you will need each piece to meet, and the overall composition of the furniture sets in the space. If you need help choosing furniture for living room or your main apartment space, then read on.

Apartment Layout

The first part of your furnishing equation will be determined by the layout of your apartment. Naturally, with smaller apartments like one-bed rooms or studios, you will not be able to have an enormous sectional – unless you want it to be the only piece of furniture in your space. The pieces of living room furniture you choose should be picked on the basis of your apartment layout. A good rule when dealing with smaller dwellings is to start in the kitchen area and spread out. Often the kitchen (or kitchenette) is a part of main living space.

Why start with the kitchen? Well, in most cases, this area will have a lot to do with how the rest of your seating is situated. In very small studio apartments, you will probably pick smaller round table, particularly those bistro styles that are counter height and come with stools to match. You should choose round tables since they are easier to move around when you have limited clearance. Square and rectangular tables may be useful since they may accommodate more people, but you should determine if they can be moved against the wall to open up more space.

Style of Furniture

As you can maybe tell, the style of living room furniture you choose will be determined by how your apartment is set up. You will quickly be able to tell if certain coffee tables or chairs will fit when you take an account of the space. So what style of furniture should you choose? Now, this is entirely a matter of taste and budget. If you want a leather sofa sectional, then are you prepared to buy one? What about a leather ottoman too? Better yet, is what type of living room furniture will be accommodated properly while also meeting your personal preferences? Think about this process long and hard.

A modern or contemporary look to your coffee table might make it easier to incorporate different pieces when you have to pick living room furniture based more on its use of space than any other considerations.

The Modern Living Room

So, isn’t it time for that Modern Living room experience? Prepared to live with modern style furniture but don’t know where to start? Let’s start.

Things I would recommend you would be to first choose the best modern wall unit, TV stand or entertainment center for the living room since your sofa position and measurements will very much depend of the placement of your TV entertainment center, TV stand, or the complete wall unit. You can, obviously, choose to just obtain a modern TV stand however I strongly recommend you to obtain a complete wall unit. This may be the most creative and different piece of furniture in your living room, the piece that will give your living style not only modern but absolutely unique look. Nowadays, because of so many options and various modern wall units available everything depends only on your creativity to build your own style from what furniture manufacturers are offering you. Having your entertainment system set up by an A/V Company will also ensure that you’ll have optimal entertainment experience at home.

Modern sofas, modern sectional sofas, dinette area tables – many of these units the thing is in stores usually look somewhat alike as to the your neighbors have. But modern wall unit gives you an opportunity to create something really attractive, nice, unique and futuristic piece of modern furniture. And also to reach that goal, let me offer some helpful hints that always work with me:

A wall unit is usually what you see first when enter a living room so work hard onto it. First, you really need to begin with choosing the right size – yes, it does matter here. There’s a quite simple rule for that wall unit I personally use: “90-60-90”, or I would say “90-60-45-90″ J. What it really means is the fact that, usually, wall units geometrically are available in standard sizes like 90, 60 and 45 cm. Sometimes you will find 120 and 100 cm units existing but those usually are TV bases or base units. Depth typically doesn’t exceed 15-17″ for wall mounted units or self storage units and 20-24” for base units. Believe me, if you’ve carried this out a part of your research correctly, it’ll serve you right.

Nowadays, lots of colors and finishes can be used for modern wall units. Lacquer, wood veneer…. I especially like black / white, black / red lacquered color combinations; however, even though white color looks nice, be cautious by using it. The colour of your wall might spoil the result (means in case your wall is painted in white, beige or of white then white wall unit will blend in and you won’t have that contrast effect you have been looking for).

Please…. Do not try to create your wall unit spacey and useful at the same time…. It’s not going to work… there are lots of closets in your house so not get rid of the look, keep it simplistic, low to the ground, open and airy.

Last but not least – do not overplay and do not ignore your components… Some wall units like low boards with the TV on top look nice in the catalog However in the real life by trying to set up a TV there, you’ll have insufficient space and lots of cords to cover. So be careful when choosing a TV unit inside your wall unit, make sure you know measurements of all your components you buy the wall unit for and try to visually hide everything in to the TV unit. Sometimes a back panel works nice to hide cords underneath the panel. Sometimes TV units are made this way to cover all those ugly cords. So be careful – this is very important.

Modern sofas… or modern sectional sofas would be the most commonly used pieces of living room furniture today. Here are some recommendations when selecting one: it is always better if you position the sofa and your chase lounge as our biological forebears both face your TV (wall unit). I additionally like the idea of putting chase lounges on sides of the modern sectional sofa. The result is: it’ll make a sitting place cozier…. The entire place feels more secure and separated from other areas that way, which makes it a space for easy relaxation, a full time income quarter inside a living quarter.

It is usually your decision to choose between a modern leather sofa and a modern fabric sofa. I like fabric sofas myself. It is more comfortable for me personally and you have lots of different colors to play with but, once more, it is always your decision.

Now, let’s get to the modern coffee table choices. In case your room is big or even huge, low profile tables in wenge finish would look excellent there. If you ask me, I would prefer arm tables. They save more than enough room; they are not heavy, they are convenient enough to put a newspaper or perhaps a cup of coffee in it when you need it. Or you can hide it when you are not utilizing it. There is a wide array of most of these tables nowadays in wenge, glass (almost all of then have adjustable height).

Do not use a rug, even if it has a modern print onto it, use cow hides. Natural and / or faux will always work the right way in your floor accenting a contemporary look of the room. Also a few chairs or foot stools in matching colors could be used when there is a need to increase the amount of seats.

Modern Dining or Dinette area… Wrong choice here could kill your whole job of making your modern living room. Dinette table and chairs, even if you choose a contemporary ones, still looks heavy and attracts an excessive amount of attention to itself, taking everything away from the rest of your beautifully created ensemble. To resolve this problem and not to kill all previously done work, I would suggest picking out a console table, in both wenge finish or glass. One side of it usually gets permanently attached to the wall. The other side has nice modern chrome legs. These consoles are often difficult to find but they can be customized easily (and mostly cheap).
